Micrasterias crux melitensis

 

Micrasterias crux melitensis is a fresh water algae, a desmid (class Desmidiaceae) of acid water mainly found in moorland situations. This desmid was photographed alive. Although stained permanent mounts may be made of this organism, they rarely retain the brilliance of the living creature.

The name Micrasterias means 'small star' so it seemed an appropriate organism for this set of pages.
