Having presented, last month, some of the algal inhabitants of the Cadover pond I thought it an idea to show some of the other organisms that are frequently seen in the various sample collections. I have not attempted to take all organisms to species level. The rotifer Euchlanis shown is, I believe, one of the few times I have seen a male rotifer. There is a large retrocerebral organ behind the brain and the gut is rudimentary with a large testis. A mpeg video made at the time showed a number of sperm associated with the rotifer. It was also my first observation of Euglena acus, with its very prominent paramylon rods. All comments to the author, Mike Morgan, are welcomed. |
