How do we find all these
treasures?
In soft waters, a little acid, often in a place where
nutrient rich water mixes with an oligotrophic type of
water. It is not a good sign if you see colonies of ducks
or sea gulls on a pond or lake. Apart from planktonic
species that we have to catch with a net, a very
productive way of collecting desmids is to squeeze water
plants, especially bog mosses or species like bladderwort
(Utricularia).
