| In contrast to the many species
in fresh water, in the marine environment we find only 5
species. Common in British waters is Podon
polyphemoides. The set of images on the left shows
the development of the young in the brood pouch on the
back. Podon is recognisable by its large compound eye. Another species of marine waterflea that can often be found flourishing in the spring is Evadne Nordmanni. The image below shows an individual with a winter egg. Evadne has a more elongated body shape and a distinct spine at its rear end. |
